in fairness, i always like to point out that i am not a health professional, though i am nationally group fitness certified by afaa, and am also certified as a yoga instructor

additionally, along with my wife, we have taken several classes from silversneakers and are eligible to teach senior fitness classes in their format

however, though i have been active in sports and fitness most my life, and written quite a few poems about sports, i am not a nurse nor licensed health professional

so how can i write nursing and other medical health profession related poetry?

the simplest most direct answer is, we listened to and asked our customers and wrote poetry they felt they needed for family and others in the health fields

my wife and i had begun writing poems and selling them at art shows and malls in the early 90s to compliment my art work that we also showed

though we began with family related poetry, mom and dad and others, we were quickly asked to produce similar work, that didn?t require medical knowledge, yet showed appreciation felt for someone who was a nurse or doctor or even other related fields, like emt and lab tech

thus began a process we applied to not only nursing related poetry, but business, legal, and teaching fields -

we interviewed people, had conversations, and received incredible feedback for these poems

this also explains why the collections features a few non-generic gender poems, and have both a male and female language version for the same work

?My dad needed a lot of care at home his last few years, and the various nurses and therapists that came by were always a welcome warm sight. A very needed sight.?

Repatriation and reimbursement in case of airline insolvency is important for 86% of business travellers, according to a survey carried out by GEBTA.?

When an airline ceases operating, passengers with standalone tickets have no recourse against the airline to recover the money of their unused ticket or to obtain repatriation if they are stranded abroad, be they business or leisure travellers. The recent failures of the airlines Spanair and Malev were a painful reminder that all passengers are badly hit in case an airline becomes insolvent.

This is an issue of concern for business travellers. According to a survey carried out by GEBTA, the benefit of reimbursement and repatriation would be very important for 67% of business travellers and rather important for 19%, amounting to 86% of business travellers considering it important.

The concerns of business travellers go to the extent that 62% of the respondents would find worth paying 1 euros per air ticket to ensure repatriation or reimbursement in case an airline becomes bankrupt.

These findings are significant at a time when the European Commission is studying policy options to address passenger protection in case of airline failure. It commissioned a study in 2011 which has determined that a compulsory protection system would be feasible and the most effective option to protect passengers. But the European Commission is not excluding a voluntary scheme instead.

Said the Secretary General of GEBTA, Mr. Michel de Blust: "The lack of passenger protection in case of airline failure must not be underestimated by European Institutions. It is urgent that the European Commission initiates a compulsory system obliging airlines to protect all passengers in case an airline ceases operating."

Montgomery County supervisors still have a public hearing and a final vote ahead before they can conclude an unusually contentious budget season.
But there may be little leeway to change what is shaping up to be a record tax increase ?of 12 cents added to the present real estate tax rate of 75 cents per $100 value.

The highest previous annual jump in the real estate rate that county officials can recall was 8 cents. It has been more usual for Montgomery County to lower its real estate rate to offset rising assessments.

This year, however, the county?s budget has been squeezed by a continuing weak economy, the end of federal stimulus money, and shifts in the state budget that are predicted to reduce support to schools and other Montgomery agencies ? all coming at a time when the county has launched construction of two new high schools and renovation of a middle school.

Facing budget requests that could have translated to a 24?cent jump in the real estate rate, county supervisors last week agreed to a slimmer spending plan and voted to advertise a 12-cent increase in the real estate tax rate. The advertisement sets an upper limit on the tax rate supervisors can approve.
A public hearing on the proposed budget and tax rate is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday at the County Government Center in Christiansburg. Supervisors plan to adopt a final spending plan and tax rate April 16.

The twin demands of the county?s bond rating and its real estate tax billing schedule appear to leave scant room for further maneuvering.

Back in November, bond rating agencies based their favorable reviews of Montgomery County?s finances on the assumption that a 10-cent increase in the real estate tax rate would be implemented to cover debt the county was taking on to pay for new school construction. Since the rating agencies?reports are considered essential to the county?s ability to borrow money at favorable rates, it is unlikely that supervisors will go for a tax increase much below 10 cents.

County Administrator Craig Meadows? budget proposal, which supervisors OK?d last week, pegs about 9 cents of the tax increase to school construction.

Meadows recommended a 12-cent increase, with the remaining revenue helping the schools maintain a basically flat operating budget, countering an increase in the price of the county?s participation in the Western Virginia Regional Jail, and increased retirement costs, among other expenses.

While some supervisors favor an increase above 12?cents, such a move would now require re-advertising the tax rate. This would throw off the timetable of issuing the real estate tax tickets, a schedule that is central to Montgomery County?s budget preparations.

At Monday?s meeting, supervisors broke into opposing camps on the tax rate.
Supervisors Mary Biggs and Annette Perkins supported Matt Gabriele?s suggestion of a 13-cent tax increase, with the revenue from the additional 1 cent, about $700,000, dedicated to long-term planning and needs.

Supervisors Gary Creed and Chris Tuck advocated an increase lower than 12?cents. Creed, as he has been throughout the budget discussions, was outspoken on the idea of the county?s raising what he termed ?extra? money beyond Meadow?s budget proposal.

?Can you imagine a worse time to be adding to people?s tax base?? Creed said. ?This is not the time to raise extra money for anything.?

Supervisor Bill Brown and board Chairman Jim Politis held something of a middle ground, saying they liked Gabriele?s call for longer-term financial planning, but could not support a tax increase higher than 12 cents this year.

Politis said Friday that the only factor he thought would shift the 12-cent increase would be if the General Assembly?s still-unresolved budget discussions wrap up before the county?s April 16 budget vote. If decreases in state assistance prove to be less serious than expected, a lower tax increase would be required, he said.

?I still feel myself like Richmond?s going to help us a little bit,? Politis said.

It may be impossible to time travel back to 1960s-era New York, but that hasn?t stopped some "Mad Men" fans and haunts featured on the TV show from trying.

"Mad Men," which premiers its fifth season on Sunday, is filmed predominately in Los Angeles, but nostalgia for the fictional advertising world of Don Draper and his fellow Madison Avenue executives has spawned a wave of tourism in Manhattan, where the drama is set.

The show ?is as quintessentially New York as yellow taxis and pastrami on rye,? writes NYC & Company, the official marketing, tourism and partnership organization for New York City.

?New York City is the center of media and pop culture ? visitors are drawn here partly because they see the city portrayed in film and television and it feels familiar to them,? said Kimberly Spell, chief communications officer for NYC & Company. Shows like ?Mad Men? ?accentuate the unique vibrancy, style and glamour of the city.?

Leading up to the premier, the city is boasting special hotel packages, "Mad Men"-themed cocktails, walking tours, and ample opportunities to dress up in period attire and turn back the clocks to soak up the retro style and glamour of the 1960s.

The cast and creator of "Mad Men" talk about long-awaited fifth-season premiere of the critically acclaimed drama, revealing what they've been up to during the 17-month hiatus and addressing star Jon Hamm's frank comments about the Kardashians.

Here is a round up of some of them:

NYC Discovery Walking Tours offers fans a chance to stroll through midtown, taking in the history and architecture of the era.?On ?The World of Mad Men: NYC During the Early 1960?s,? stops include the Summit Hotel, the Seagram Building, the Pan Am Building, and the Lever House, and other places Don Draper might have seen when he leaves his office to buy a ?35 cent pack of cigarettes and meet a client for lunch.? The private tour was given about four times in recent weeks, Anthony said. ?People are always looking for that part of New York history they want to escape to.? ?

Several companies offer general tours,?including NYC Discovery Walking Tours? ?Famous Movie Sites of the East Side? and the guided bus tour ?New York TV & Movie Sites,? given by On Location Tours, that pass or point out "Mad Men" locations, like the Time & Life Building and the Ziegfeld Theatre.

The Roosevelt Hotel NYC, the setting of several episodes and where Don Draper lived in Season 2?after his wife Betty threw him out, offers a ?Mad Men in the City? package. The Pierre, a Taj Hotel, which has appeared in previous episodes, offers guests the chance to sip classic cocktails from the early 60s and ?dress up in their favorite 'Mad Men'-inspired garb and embrace their inner Don Draper and Joan Holloway? beginning on March 27 and on every Tuesday throughout the season. The offer is part of the regular weekly complimentary jazz music series from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Two E Bar/Lounge. Cocktails on the special drink menu cost $14 and include Irish Coffee, one of fictional character Roger Sterling?s staples, and the? University of Saskatchewan Professor Emeritus Lorne Babiuk has been awarded the prestigious Canada Gairdner Wightman Award in recognition of his accomplishments over three decades that include leading the U of S Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO) to become a world centre for vaccine research, training and development.

Next to the Nobel Prizes, Canada Gairdner Awards are considered the most important international biomedical honors. In fact, one in four past recipients has gone on to receive a Nobel Prize. Babiuk, currently vice-president research at the University of Alberta, has been honored with the $100,000 Canada Gairdner Wightman award, a special award to a Canadian who demonstrates "outstanding leadership in medicine and medical science through his/her career."

Babiuk, who earned three of his four degrees from the U of S and served as a U of S Canada Research Chair, is cited for "extraordinary national and international leadership in vaccine development and research on human and veterinary infectious disease control."

"Lorne's creative and resourceful leadershipthe hallmark of University of Saskatchewan researchhas led to many vaccine and infectious disease discoveries that will have an impact on improving animal and human health for decades to come," said Karen Chad, U of S vice-president research.

"His work and its continuing legacy are helping to put the University of Saskatchewanalready home to veterinary, agricultural and medical schoolsat the forefront of integrating human, animal and ecosystem health to address threats to the 'one health' we all share."

With 36 issued patents and 13 pending, Babiuk led a VIDO team that developed six livestock vaccines that were world firsts, including the world's first genetically engineered vaccine for an animal species. Known for applying animal research to human diseases, he created a vaccine against rotavirus in calves that enabled researchers to later develop a vaccine against the viral bowel infection in children.

Babiuk was lead investigator on a $5.6-million (U.S.) Bill and Melinda Gates Grand Challenge in Global Health grant to develop a single dose, needle-free vaccine against whooping cough in infants and young children. U of S research is now underway to apply this new vaccine delivery technology to other diseases.

In 2005, Babiuk spearheaded a $19.4-million expansion of VIDO. Prior to leaving VIDO in 2007, he created the vision for the International Vaccine Centre (InterVac), a $140-million level three biocontainment facilityone of the largest of its kind in the worldthat will advance the next generation of vaccines to protect animal and human health in Canada and around the world.

Part of VIDO, InterVac was officially opened in September 2011 by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Premier Brad Wall and Mayor Don Atchison. InterVac targets many emerging and re-emerging diseases, the majority of which originate in animals, including pandemic influenza, West Nile virus and tuberculosis. More than 30 diseases have newly emerged or re-emerged over the last 30 years, and 70 per cent of them have been transmitted from animals to humans.

Babiuk chairs the board of PREVENT (Pan-Provincial Vaccine Enterprise Inc.), a national centre of excellence located at VIDO that fast-tracks vaccine development for diseases of major public health concern.

Gairdner awardees will travel across Canada this fall giving a series of public lectures. An awards presentation gala event will take place Oct. 25 in Toronto.

"Being recognized by the Gairdner Foundation is a tremendous honor because I consider it to be one of the top awards in the world," said Babiuk. "It really is very elite company. It's hugely humbling and very rewarding to be able to receive this recognition."
