In my informal poll of coworkers and friends, I found that many of us view storms as kind of thrilling.

Of course, if you?ve ever been caught in a hurricane or another dangerous natural event, you?d probably disagree vehemently with those who find approaching storms ?exciting in a good way??you?d say they are frightening and deadly and exciting in a bad way.

And I?d have to agree. The potential loss of life and property is not something that I can view as other than tragic.

However, the sheer power of a storm is, for me, a spiritual experience. It?s also, for me, a reminder that that we are not in control, the Creator is.

For reasons beyond our ken, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, blizzards and other extreme nature events occur, no matter whether we want them to or not. They remind us that sometimes we just have to accept what occurs in our lives.

Should we try to overcome negative events? Sure, when possible. But sometimes, and in some cases, when facing personal hurricanes, storms of grief, painful losses, emotional swings, and so on, we have to learn to prepare ourselves, batten down the hatches, and wait out the storm.

Here?s a list of ?hurricane? preparations of the human kind:

1. Stock up your batteries and conserve energy.

You need physical and emotional energy to keep going. Energy generators which stock your ?batteries? include extra sleep, comforting and healthy foods, cutting back, when possible, on too many unnecessary or stressful activities, and taking care of your mental health in the way that works for you.

2. You?ll to light the darkness. Have some extra flashlights and a lantern ready and stock up on candles and matches.

Light is a common metaphor for inspiration and insight. Keep reading inspiring books, blogs, articles. (Avoid stuff that is dark or draining). Listen to uplifting music. Try to befriend inspiring people or at least read their biographies. Prayer and meditation are great light-bringers.

3. ?Stock up on bottled water.

In a natural crisis, water supplies can become tainted or can even be shut off. But, water is essential to life. Water purifies and hydrates, washes away the sticky stuff and deadly germs, it keeps us feeling fresh. There is more water on this planet than land. Water is the greater part of nature.

Immerse yourself in things that strengthen you, keep you feeling fresh. For me this includes walks in natural settings, running, and other outdoor activities. The great outdoors, or even a city park, heal the mind and soul.

4. Have some cash on hand.

You might need to fall back on some hard cash in emergencies. So be sure to have the currency you earned ready to use. Cash is a metaphor for healthy coping skills, behavioral skills, and all the interpersonal skills you?ve gained in therapy and in life. Spend them when you need them. Best of all, unlike money, the more you use your ?mental? cash, the more it multiplies and the more you have!

5. Lock your doors.

Sometimes, you have to lock your doors. Lock in the good friends, ?supportive and healthy relationships; but lock out the draining, negative ones.

Chimpanzee innovations may be low tech by human standards, but they get the job done and are gradually improving and spreading, a new study co-authored by famed primatologist Jane Goodall suggests.

The study, published in the latest issue of Current Anthropology, presents the first documented case of successful transmission of a novel cultural behavior ? ant fishing ? between wild chimpanzee communities.

"Ant fishing in this case is using twigs, leaf midribs or grass probes to extract carpenter ants from their nests in living trees or dead wood," lead author Robert O'Malley, an assistant professor of anthropology at Kenyon College, told Discovery News.

Chimps trim their twig tools at the end, with side twigs and excess bark often removed, he added.

A clever and popular female chimp named Trezia somehow figured out this technique. Trezia, from the Mitumba chimp community of Gombe National Park, was transferred to the park's Kasekela chimpanzee community, where ant fishing is now all the rage among females around her age.

"Trezia ascended the Kasekela hierarchy more quickly than most immigrants, who often remain a bit peripheral in the community after emigrating, and she was not skittish around other chimpanzees," O'Malley said. "All this suggests she would have been a viable model for younger cohorts."

The Kasekela chimps had a win-win because, in addition to gaining smart Trezia, they also had the perfect classroom to learn from her: a relaxing spot called Hilltop.

"Kasekela chimpanzees tend to take a siesta at Hilltop for a few minutes or a few hours when they pass through the area, so it provides a relaxed social context and perhaps a good learning environment," explained O'Malley.

"There is very little undergrowth so visibility is very good," he said. "Most importantly, there are multiple fishing sites in visual proximity, including at least one Camponotus (type of ant) nest in a particular place at Hilltop."

Trezia is only the latest chimp to gain fame and food fortune among her own kind. A proficient nut-cracking female chimp in Liberia might have spread her know-how to others.

Then there is Imo, a Japanese macaque who learned to wash sweet potatoes.

"Imo also learned to throw scattered rice grains into the sea to separate them from sand, and a few other tricks as well," O'Malley said, adding that others within her own group observed her success and soon copied her methods.

Males also come up with their own useful techniques that appear to spread within their groups. A dramatic example concerns a male chimp living in Bossou, Guinea. He learned to deactivate snares, rescuing other chimps and setting off others before they harmed animals.

Vernon Reynolds, a primate expert who serves as an adviser at the Budongo Forest Research Project, told Discovery News that while the Bossou findings are "exceptional ... our chimps at Budongo make alarm calls at snares and also, on one occasion at least, our alpha male removed a snare from an adult female."

While chimpanzees in protected parks are better able to spread their knowledge, humans are sadly hurting the overall ability of these fellow primates to improve their lot in life through shared innovations.

"The many chimpanzee communities across Africa that have already disappeared have taken any unique cultural patterns of behavior with them," O'Malley said. "As the remaining populations become more isolated, there will be fewer opportunities for individuals to transfer between communities, which limits opportunities for both gene flow and for cultural diffusion."

Meet Abedin Sham, the owner of this stunning villa near Goa?s Candolim Beach as he speaks to us in an exclusive interview.

"); Please tell us something about your background ? Personal and Professional.
Tennis is my passion. It?s something I grew up playing, to the point where I?ve had to miss family holidays to travel to small towns instead for tournaments in the midst of summer! I left home to pursue tennis at the age of 12, and lived, traveled, and schooled in the United States over 12 years.

I moved back to India permanently in 2006 and set up a fast food model called Wich Latte. At the time of conception, I noticed a gap in the sandwich market and thought this was an idea that would work. I spent about nine months doing research with my chef and another six months getting the kitchen and caf? ready. I?ve been running it for five years now, and we?re in the midst of a revamp and an expansion. We?ll be opening six more outlets by the end of this financial year, and hopefully expand to a total of 25 caf?s by next December.

Can you tell us a bit about the property and its history? When did you acquire it?
Goa has always been a favorite destination, and having studied hospitality, coupled with the tourism boom, I figured it would be a great place to start something small.

The land was acquired in 1986, but had been lying dormant. I wasn?t completely familiar with the property until I vacationed in Goa in 2007. I was with a friend, Nikhil Chinappa, and whilst walking on the land he came up with the idea of a music festival, now come to be known as Sunburn. I also wanted to have a second home in Goa, so we decided to build a small place for us to come and stay when we visited. Construction on the property began in 2008, and the house was semi finished in December 2010.

When and why did you decide to turn your property into a holiday home/ homestay? How did you start out? What are the small changes you made to change from a home to a holiday home?
I?ve only actually begun using the villa on a consistent basis from May 2012. Whenever friends would visit me whilst there, or stay with me, they?d always tell me to let the place out to them privately. When I finally decided to go ahead with the idea, I figured that the property would have to be upgraded, considering the profile of guests that would be staying there. I have now employed a full time cook, caretaker, added wi-fi, new upholstery and a sound system?everything one would require for a comfortable stay.

Can you please tell us how much involvement is required from you (as the owner) to successfully run a vacation rental business?
Initially a lot of time is spent looking into the nitty gritty and individual tastes and preferences of each guest. As I am new to this business, I will learn as I go along, but I?m confident of providing folks that do come by with a memorable experience.

According to you what makes your property unique? Why do you think travelers should rent out your property?
The villa is situated on eight acres of land, sits right on the beach, is surrounded by coconut trees and has uninterrupted views of the sea. If that?s not unique enough, the Sunburn music festival is held here every December

The house itself has been designed in a Moorish style, in 2009 by Patzchke Designs. The villa is stark white, with splashes of colour and intricate details such as traditional marble finishes, antique Indian furniture, and a beautiful mosaic floor laid on the roof terrace in the shape of the zodiac. The front doors are teak wood, salvaged from an old Indian palace, and restored with hand-made iron locks.

The villa sits right in the heart of Candolim, and the beach is literally right outside the door. Candolim has some of the finest bars and restaurants in Goa, which are all not more than a five minute walk away. The Candolim Road also has a lot of shops where guests will be able to choose from local souvenirs, amongst many other things.

I think all the above make my villa a great option when choosing a luxury vacation home whilst in Goa.

What is the present level of activity in the real estate sector of Goa? Would you recommend it as a location for holiday home buyers and homestays?
The cost of real estate has increased drastically in Goa, especially in the prime regions, beaches, and river fronts. Coupled with the increased cost of construction, and increased operational costs, a better option at this point would be to rent out a holiday home instead.

You must have been interacting with several kinds of visitors who had stayed in your home? What kinds of guests, according to you, are suitable for staying in a holiday home?
I think all types of guests, except business and convention travelers are suitable targets for staying at holiday homes. People want to stay in a place that offers them a greater value for money. Holiday homes give you more space, allow guests to personalize their vacation by way of unique meals, flexibility on time, etc

What is your philosophy that drives how you run things in your property? Do you have any set rules or ideals that as a holiday home owner you must follow?
It?s simple, really?just treat the property as you would your own home

Unlike hotels, in a holiday home rental, you are opening up your home to guests, most of whom you have just interacted with or have never met before. How do you ensure or how do you build the trust that makes you believe that a particular guest is best for your holiday home?
It all comes down to the basics.? I always start with a phone call?it acts as a buffer and gives you a better idea as to what the guests are expecting. Also, websites like tripvillas help just in case things don?t go quite as planned from either side.

Trust is a very important factor when it comes to successfully run a holiday home rental business. How do you ensure that all guests coming to stay in your property are trustworthy?
You can never tell, but the best way to safeguard yourself is to take money upfront, or when guests check in, that way you get a slight advantage. Hiring the right kind of staff is also important. They need to know how to deal with guests, in case a situation does arise.

Have you had any high profile guests? What are important things to keep in mind while handling them?
As the property is located where Sunburn happens, we do have a few high profile folks who drop by. Unfortunately there?s no more I can say on that subject as the privacy of my guests is paramount.

Have you added any amenities on the luxury side? What are ones that you are eying?
To take the luxury home to the next level, we are in the process of tying up with local spas and even adding a beach volleyball court on the property. Also, I would like to tie up with the PADI school to offer special deals to people that get to stay at the villa and get certified over a four day course. I think that will be a pretty cool memory to create.

What are present rates that you charge? Where would you like to see this go in the near term and what do you think we as an industry can do to get better rates?
Currently we charge INR 20,000 per night, which is inclusive of breakfast. The only changes that would help guests would be the taxation and employment issues. Right now there are a host of different taxes that guests have to pay.

What percentage of your business comes from travel agencies? Social Media? Friends ? Regular clients?
About 50% is word of mouth, while the rest of my business comes from agencies, websites, etc.

Any tips for other vacation home/ homestay owners?
I?m still learning, but what I think is important is for both sides to be clear on exactly what they want and what they?re expecting from their stay. This way, things can be arranged accordingly and everyone is happy.

Book retailer Barnes & Noble this morning revealed that 63 of its stores have been victims of PIN pad tampering, following an internal investigation of "every PIN pad in every store" (just under 700 locations). B&N calls the tampering, "a sophisticated criminal effort to steal credit card information, debit card information, and debit card PIN numbers," and warns customers who may have swiped their cards at affected locations to alter debit card PINs as a precaution, as well as to keep an eye on credit card statements for false charges.

B&N specifically note that its company database hasn't been breached, and purchases made through the B&N website, its Nook e-reader, and the Nook mobile apps are unaffected. According to the company, the PIN pads were implanted with "bugs" that allowed the recording of credit card numbers and PINs. To be extra safe, B&N disconnected all of its PIN pads on September 14 and is only allowing credit card purchases directly through cash registers. Jaguar XK8 And XKR Luxury Classic Sports-Cars

The Jaguar XK8 sports car replaced the long-serving XJS in 1996. Overall compared to its predecessor the Jaguar XJS the newer updated replacement model, the XK8, was assessed as a good upscale improved automotive product line being a much more "elegant" and smoother riding automobile which was powered by Jaguar's new V-8 engine.

Although the Jaguar XK8 of 1996 could be said to basically be broadly based on the chassis and platform engineering of the long-running XJ6, the earlier car's looks always precluded it from being seen as an "out and out" classic motorcar. The original XJS coupe of 1975 had evolved from the shortened platform of the XJ6 saloon and in a 21 year "career" of production from home factory it had definitely evolved, even meandered, through differing power plant families, a restyle, and two different convertible versions, yet no doubt by the early 1990's the line was "long in the tooth" and definitely needed a major make-over. It was a known secret among Jaguar aficionados and knowledgeable luxury enthusiasts and experts that in the 1980's that there had already been one "false start" (project XJ41). In addition four -wheel drive had been mooted, but after a lot of work and costs expended, yet this too was abandoned yielding little but some technical, marketing and auto styling expertise gained along the pathways.

Fortunately for Jaguar, the Ford Motor Company had taken over direct control in 1989, the funds, resources and motivations being available for a brand new stab at the project. Styling and mechanical engineering and in particular a totally brand-new V-8 motor were both designed and available. Thus a new vehicle emerged and evolved to be called the "XK8" was previewed to a select few in March 1996. Initial assessments and comments were that the car had both good looks and high quality.

Compared with the old XJS, the XK8 used the same basic (though much refined 102 inch/ 259 cm wheelbase platform and suspension systems. Yet on closer and fuller examination it was not a rehash of the old - but rather in actuality a completely brand new front end components and mechanical setups. Yet again fortuitously the new 4-cam, four liter V8 engine was not in testing stages - but had been fully tested and perfected. On top of that the engine would be used in XJ8 saloons as well and there was a choice of full convertible body styles as well as the choice of the coupe model styling.

Where the XJS had been craggy, the XKB was sleek and rounded. There was a "low nose' with a "wide-mouth" oval grille, specially sculptured headlamps and lines which rose gently, but persistently toward the rounded tail. There was a space in the cabin for "2 + 2 "seating - or to be honest, for generous two-seater accommodation with very occasional rear seats for willing children or perhaps midget adults.

The equipment was as carefully detailed as expected, with road safety airbags ahead of both front-seats as well as a full display of instruments and controls laid out well in the Jaguar traditional walnut dash-board. Every vehicle in the lineup had installed a ZF high-speed automatic transmission. As expected in a luxury auto of its class and pricing ABS brakes were standard equipment, electronic traction control, and a power operated convertible soft top retraction.

The new 290 bhp ( boiler horse power units) V8 engine powered seamlessly, without restraint or hesitation jump starting the car in an instant down the road with no hesitation what so ever and guaranteeing a top speed in the ranges of 155 miles per hour. On top of that the driver and passenger rode in both quiet cabin noise levels and yet a most well controlled and civilized ride down the road or highway. Previous 1950's and 1960's era Jaguar owners and riders would have been in quite a culture shock indeed all said.

As if this was not enough for an impressed automotive market place (especially and particularly in North America - that is the United States and Canada, where after all the lions share of worldwide sales of Jaguar fine motor cars were being sold and marketed via the Ford Motor Company marketing and sales networks direct assistance and expertise), Jaguar itself set out to develop, produce and ultimately market, an even more colossally performing version - that being the "XKR" designation. This XKR setup finally made its debut onto the automotive scene in the year of 1998.

The already "lusty" V8 was treated to an "Eaton-type supercharger". Purists will note and insist on the distinction that an "Eaton type supercharger" is technically, to purists, not and not the same as a gasoline powered engine "turbocharger". Al told though what matters is that with this accessory device that power from the power-plant was fully pushed way up to a majestic 370 bhp.

Although this vehicle's top speed was unfortunately "limited" to the 155 miles per hour (roughly equivalent to 249.45 km per hour speed), it was a more than exhilarating drive with exceptionally rapid acceleration. Those who knew the handling characteristics and speeds of the long serving XJ6 model line, which it fully replaced, were more than impressed overall.

As all in all as these cars came out of Jaguar production lines, by the end of the 1990's, the XK8 was selling faster than its predecessor, or predecessors had ever done. What a champion and winner.

But who remembers that six people from the U.S. Embassy fled to the Canadian Embassy? Or that they escaped from Iran safely?

What happened to those people forms the story portrayed in Ben Affleck?s latest movie, ?Argo.? The six people were rescued by a CIA agent (played by Affleck), who decided he could best get them out by pretending they were part of a Canadian film crew making a cheesy science fiction flick in Iran called ?Argo.?

The story is true, and the movie sticks to it. Mostly. There?s a little more suspense here than in ?The Master of Disguise," the book by Antonio J. Mendez on which the movie is largely based. Besides Affleck, ?Argo? stars John Goodman as a makeup artist, Alan Arkin as the producer of ?Argo,? Bryan Cranston as Affleck?s CIA boss, and Victor Garber as the Canadian ambassador.

This movie is being hailed as one of the year's best. Here's what the critics are saying:

The propulsive hostage thriller "Argo," the third feature directed by Ben Affleck, just plain works. It's heartening to encounter a film, based on fact but happy to include all sorts of exciting fictions to amp up the suspense, whose entertainment intentions are clear. The execution is clean, sharp and rock-solid. It's as apolitical as a political crisis story set in Iran can get. JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - After threatening to revoke the accreditation of the Jackson city school system Nov. 1 over a failure to improve special education services, the state Board of Education reversed course Friday.

Officials now say they will give Mississippi's second largest school district until June 2013 if the district agrees to work with the state to solve the problems.

The district has until Oct. 30 to agree on a plan with the interim state superintendent to gain the extension. It calls for interim State Superintendent Lynn House and Jackson Superintendent Cedric Gray to mutually name a special education administrator who will report directly to the state Department of Education. The district must make sure its employees cooperate with the administrator and must agree to resolve "personnel concerns" raised by the administrator.

World stocks rise on US, China recovery signs

BANGKOK (AP) ? Stock markets rose Thursday after an unexpectedly strong U.S. housing report renewed confidence in the world's biggest economy and the latest data from China suggested the worst of its slump is over.

The U.S. Commerce Department said Wednesday that builders started construction on new single-family houses and apartments at the fastest pace in more than four years. Housing starts surged to an annual rate of 872,000 in September, far above estimates. Housing is crucial to any economic recovery in the U.S. and the numbers offset the gloom from some mediocre earnings reports.

China, meanwhile, released figures that showed its worst economic slowdown since the 2008 global crisis leveled out in the third quarter while retail sales improved. The world's No. 2 economy grew 7.4 percent ? still slower than the previous quarter's 7.6 growth but declining at a much gentler rate than before.

"The expectation now is that China's economy has bottomed out and we can look forward to better results in the fourth quarter," said Francis Lun, managing director of Lyncean Holdings in Hong Kong.

European stocks were mostly higher in early trading. Britain's FTSE 100 rose 0.2 percent to 5,919.72. Germany's DAX added 0.1 percent to 7,401.59. But France's CAC-40 lost 0.2 percent to 3,520.89.

Wall Street appeared headed for a marginally higher open. Dow Jones industrial futures rose 0.1 percent to 13,498 and S&P 500 futures were flat at 1,456.80.

The U.S. and Chinese indicators are rare good news for the global economy, which has been weighed down by Europe's chronic debt crisis and sluggish American growth. But analysts at DBS Bank Ltd in Singapore said it remains to be seen whether the housing data represents the start of a real U.S. recovery.

"One thing's for sure: nowhere else do you see this sort of growth in the economy. If for that reason alone, it's worth watching," DBS said in a market commentary.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose sharply, by 2 percent to close at 8,982.86. Hong Kong's Hang Seng added 0.5 percent to 21,518.71 and South Korea's Kospi gained 0.2 percent to 1,959.12. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 advanced 0.7 percent to 4,559.40.

Benchmarks in Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore also rose. In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite Index gained 1.2 percent to 2,131.69, the highest close in more than a month. The Shenzhen Composite Index gained 1.7 percent to 878.64.

"The gains were mostly due to investors feeling more confident after Premiere Wen Jiabao said Wednesday that he was confident that the year's economic and social development goals would be realized," said Peng Yunliang, an analyst based in Shanghai.

Poly Real Estate, China's second-largest listed property developer, gained 6.4 percent while industry leader China Vanke advanced 3.8 percent. Four real estate developers hit the daily limit of 10 percent.

Japanese heavy equipment maker Komatsu Ltd. rose 4.7 percent and Hitachi Construction Machinery gained 3.7hyundai percent. South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries advanced 2.9 percent.

The positive U.S. data and the apparent tapering off of China's slowdown helped Australian resource shares, which depend heavily on demand fueled by global growth. BHP Billiton Ltd., the world's largest mining company, gained 3.3 percent. Rio Tinto Ltd. surged 4.8 percent.

Hopes that Spain's debt calamity might ease grew ahead of a meeting of European Union leaders in Brussels later Thursday to discuss the region's financial crisis.

Markets are hoping that Spain will seek help to keep its borrowing costs down. The government in Madrid has been reluctant to do so because such aid could damage the country's image and also compel it to comply with onerous conditions.

Benchmark oil for November delivery was down 2 cents to $92.10 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 3 cents to finish at $92.12 per barrel on the Nymex on Tuesday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.3103 from $1.3123 late Wednesday in New York. The dollar rose to 79.14 yen from 78.97 yen.
