Pirlo puts in crafty performance against Germany

WARSAW, Poland (AP) -Andrea Pirlo twirled around defenders effortlessly, and even cleared a ball off the line. On both sides of the field, it was Pirlo that provided the inspiration.

The Italy playmaker didn't score, but he still helped Italy beat Germany 2-1 Thursday in the European Championship semifinals and set up a match against Spain on Sunday in Kiev.

Although he was named man of the match, Pirlo preferred to credit his teammates.

"The team was fantastic," Pirlo said. "We had a great win against a terrific side. We really hope to win the final and put in a terrific display in Kiev."

For the 33-year-old Pirlo, it was the second straight match for which he won plaudits for his incisive passing and flair in midfield. He controlled the pace against Germany and in the quarterfinals against England on Sunday. He sealed that performance with a superb chip in the penalty shootout.

On Thursday, it was Pirlo's defending that was needed early on in the match. He was glued to the goal line when Germany center back Mats Hummels' header seemed to be heading in. The ball hit Pirlo square in the chest and he cleared it off the line for Italy.

It was a crucial intervention, because the Germans had the better chances in the opening stages and going down a goal would have been a huge setback for the Italians.

Pirlo then commanded the tempo of the match, winning midfield duels and impressing the crowd at the National Stadium. A big cheer went up when Pirlo evaded a marker in the center circle with a backheel flick and then spun around to collect the ball again.

Most midfielders are already in decline at Pirlo's age, but the Italian appears to still be in his prime. He led Juventus to an undefeated Serie A season and the Italian title last month, a year after AC Milan gave up on him. He is among just four remaining members of the squad that won the 2006 World Cup.

"I've always given my best," Pirlo said. "Now that we're here in this final we've got to enjoy this to the fullest. But I'm not celebrating too much yet, because we still haven't done anything.

"We want to return home with the cup."

Congressional baseball game 2012: Political wounds still fresh

Coaches for the Democratic and Republican teams touch base before the 2012 congressional baseball game Thursday.

(Credit: CBS News)

(CBS News) WASHINGTON, D.C. - Partisanship wasn't left at the door - or more aptly, the diamond edge - Thursday night as dozens of members of Congress capped off one of the most politically charged days in recent history with a final showdown between Republicans and Democrats at the 51st annual CQ-Roll Call congressional baseball game, held at Nationals Park.

The Democrats trounced the Republicans, 18-5, despite Republicans having won more games in the past. But even several hours of playing America's favorite pastime for charity weren't enough to nurse the fresh wounds from a day that began and ended with controversial and unprecedented government actions.

In the Democrats' fan section, 17 posters spelled out "MVP Justice Roberts," homage from the left to their newfound hero, Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, Jr., whose opinion earlier in the day largely upheld President Obama's health care law as constitutional. Meanwhile, Rep. Joe Baca, D-Calif., lamented wasted time due to the second big news of the day, the House's vote to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress over matters relating to operation Fast and Furious.

Asked whether the timing of this year's game made Democrats' win particularly satisfying, Baca, who had just accepted a large trophy cup with his teammates, gave a lukewarm response.

"Well, yeah, in one sense it does, but this is only off of the Capitol," he said. "So once we get back there, back in trenches - it's too bad what we're going through, what we went through today. We should have never gone through what they put us through."

Still, he added, "it's sort of nice to rub it in a little bit."

Other, more ranking members of Congress made appearances in the crowd. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Md. - who had hours earlier walked off the House floor in protest after Holder's contempt vote led by Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio - posed for photographs above the Democratic bullpen; Boehner, meanwhile, milled about his own section.

The big draw, though, was Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, who was announced at the start of the game as the newest inductee into the league's hall of fame. Signs in the crowd included, "Take me out to the PAUL game!"

Sporting the same retro, neon-orange Astros jersey he wore when he hit his famous 1979 home run, the retiring congressman sheepishly accepted his plaque. After tossing the first pitch of the game to his son, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., the elder Paul took a seat in the stands, though his wife Carol told reporters he'd like to still play.

"How many people can wear the same set of clothes 30 years later?" Rand Paul said of his dad before the game. "Some people outgrow their clothes, and he hasn't. Reagan said, 'Paint in bold colors, not pastels.'"

Rand Paul also brought some lighthearted politics to the field: "You know the Democrats believe in a lot of regulations, right? And so we came forward with a new regulation for them this year, but they won't agree to it. We thought that there ought to be a new rule saying you can only pitch two innings, one individual can only pitch two innings. Because you know, their pitcher's kind of good," Paul joked, referring to Rep. Cedric Richmond, D-La.

Money raised by the event will go toward the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, and the Washington Literacy Center.

Netherlands soccer coach resigns after Euro fiasco

Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk resigned on Wednesday after the team?s surprising group-stage exit at Euro 2012, abruptly ending a seesaw career.

Van Marwijk?s contract to 2016 was ended ?with immediate effect,? the Dutch soccer federation said in a statement.

The Netherlands lost all three group games to Germany, Portugal and Denmark, after they had entered the tournament with the clear ambition of lifting the cup.

Van Marwijk largely stuck with the team which lost the World Cup final to Spain in extra time two years ago and paid the price. The defense was slow and leaky, its midfield aging, and its collection of stars up front never worked well together.

?I was in serious doubt, but still decided to take this step,? Van Marwijk said in a statement.

Pressure in the media had been mounting for over a week, with calls for quick action before the Netherlands starts its World Cup qualifying campaign this autumn.

Speculation has been rife about possible replacements and hours before Van Marwijk?s resignation, Feyenoord coach and former Netherlands defender Ronald Koeman explicitly said he would not take the job.

The nation had been split about whether Van Marwijk should pick English Premier League top scorer Robin van Persie or Bundesliga top striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar as centerforward, and when his decision to stick with the Arsenal striker backfired during the tournament, many blamed Van Marwijk.

However, the Dutch soccer federation decided to remember the good times.

?We are very grateful to Van Marwijk: He performed exceptionally well with a place in the World Cup final and a first place in the FIFA ranking,? soccer federation director Bert van Oostveen said.

The reality of the day was different. It was the first time in more than a decade that the Netherlands failed to reach the second round at either the World Cup or a Euro, and the first time since 1984 that the Netherlands missed out on a place in a Euro quarter-final.

Under Van Marwijk?s reign, though, something mythical was lost. Since Johan Cruyff, the Netherlands were synonymous with an orange brand of fluid, classy soccer that cherished as much the beauty of the game as the result of a match.

Van Marwijk did away with that, insisting he would rather win ugly than lose beautifully. The Netherlands were brutish during the World Cup final and still lost.

Two years later, that beauty had yet to be recovered, while the losses became worse.

In the end, there was no way out.

Now World Cup qualifying is the focus and the Netherlands is in a group with Romania and Turkey, with only one team guaranteed a spot in the finals.

Snooki Speaks on Pregnant Sex, Horny Baby Cheering on Orgasms

Effing Snooki.

The reality star (real name Nicole Polizzi) is never one to hold back, but some of her recent comments on sex during pregnancy scream "TMI" even by her standards.

Seriously, she makes the Jessica Simpson quotes about the "big O" and "swamp ass" seem downright boring. So what's Snook's sex life like? Be forewarned.

Snookie Pregnant

She revealed that she'll be dreaming about boning, only to wake up and discern that her man is actually having his way with Snooki nude. Lovely.

“I’ll be having sex in my dream, and when I wake up, I’m actually having sex. Jionni’s like, doing it with me as I’m sleeping," she told Us. ”I read your baby can feel your orgasm."

"What does he think it is? Does he see, like rainbows and unicorns? The baby is probably horny. That little creep. [During sex] he’s probably like, ‘Yeah, Mommy!’”

Good luck getting that cringe-inducing image out of your head.

She also revealed that she and fiance Jionni LaValle have set up some guidelines for child-rearing: "If we’re hungover or if we’ve had two drinks, we’re not going near the kid. We’ll give him to Grandma. God forbid we drop our baby!"

Basically, Snooki and her kid won't meet until he can walk.

Chinese space crew making homeward journey

Three Chinese astronauts have undocked their spacecraft from an orbiting robotic module and are preparing to return to Earth on Thursday night.

China's Shenzhou 9 vehicle separated from the Tiangong 1 space lab Wednesday evening, according to China's state-run Xinhua news agency. The mission's three taikonauts, as Chinese astronauts are known, returned to Shenzhou 9 to begin the maneuver at 6 p.m. ET (6 a.m. Thursday Beijing time).

The spacefliers are expected to land around 10 p.m. ET Thursday (10 a.m. Friday Beijing time), Xinhua reported. Their touchdown, in northern China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region, will wrap up a historic mission that marked a big step forward in China's ambitious space plans.

"Chinese astronauts have their own home in space now," Shenzhou 9 commander Jing Haipeng told Chinese President Hu Jintao during a congratulatory space call on Tuesday, according to Xinhua. "We are proud of our country!" [Photos of Shenzhou 9 Mission ]

Shenzhou 9 launched on June 16 carrying three astronauts, including 33-year-old Liu Yang, the nation's first woman in space. The mission aimed to pull off China's first-ever manned space docking, and it succeeded ? twice. The vessel hooked up with Tiangong 1 via remote control on June 18, and then again June 24 with the taikonauts at the wheel.

China thus became just the third country to performed a manned docking in orbit. The United States and Russia first accomplished the feat in 1966 and 1969, respectively.

Shenzhou 9's flight is testing technology and techniques needed to build a permanently staffed space station in Earth orbit. Chinense officials have said the nation hopes to have a 60-ton station up and running by 2020.

For comparison, the $100 billion International Space Station weighs about 430 tons. The huge orbiting lab is run by a consortium of more than a dozen countries, but China is not among them.

China's space dreams don't end in low-Earth orbit. The nation has said it wants to return lunar samples to Earth with a robotic spacecraft by 2016 or so, and it plans to put a taikonaut on the moon sometime after the space station is built.

In addition to Liu and Jing, Shenzhou 9's crew includes Liu Wang, 42, who steered Shenzhou 9 away from Tiangong 1 Wednesday evening. Jing, 46, also flew on China's last manned spaceflight, the Shenzhou 7 mission in 2008.

Shenzhou 9 is China's fourth manned space mission, with the other three flights coming in 2003, 2005 and 2008. The nation plans to launch another crew to Tiangong 1 soon, perhaps by the end of the year.

Tiangong 1 has been circling Earth since September 2011, and in November it linked up with the robotic Shenzhou 8 vessel, achieving China's first unmanned space docking.

SAT Vocab and the Seven Deadly Sins: Part II - Avarice

An early sixteenth century Dutch depiction of the seven deadly sins, by a follower of Heironymus Bosch.

Last time on SAT Vocab and the Seven Deadly Sins, we discussed words that have to do with the sin of lust and the virtue of chastity. This time, we move on to another deadly sin, avarice, and its corresponding heavenly virtue, charity.

What is avarice? In short, avarice means greed. It comes from the Latin verb avere, which means ?to crave.? If? someone is guilty of the sin of avarice, you would say that that person or that person?s behavior was avaricious. In Catholicism, avarice is the sin of excessive desire for wealth and material possessions, especially when accompanied by a disregard for the well-being of others. Theologically, it is seen as the rejection of heavenly, spiritual treasures in favor of worldly, material ones.

Avidity, cupidity, rapacity, and acquisitiveness are all synonyms of avarice. You may know the word avid, which is an adjective that means showing great enthusiasm for or interest in something, as in ?he is an avid reader.? The word avid came to the English language in the 1700s from the French word avide, which in turn was derived from?the Latin verb avere, the same root from which avarice is derived. It?s interesting to see how these two words evolved to have rather different meanings and connotations even though they come from the same root. Avid has lost its sinful connotations and has come to mean ?enthusiastic,? whereas avarice is an official deadly sin. Avidity, a noun form of the adjective avid, retains the meaning of greed, however.

A 1610 painting of Cupid by Schedoni.

You might think that the word cupidity would have something to do with love, since it has the name Cupid in it, and in Roman mythology Cupid was the son of the goddess of love, Venus, and he famously would cause people to fall in love with each other by shooting his arrows into their hearts. Originally, in Latin the word cupiditas (which derives from the Latin verb cupere, which means to desire, and is also a root of concupiscent, which you may remember from the post on lust) did have erotic overtones; the Romans sometimes gave their gods names that were literally the words for the abstract forces they were supposed to control, and so Cupid literally meant ?desire.? Another name for him was Amor, which literally meant ?love.? When the word moved from Latin to English in the 1400s, the desire for flesh transformed into a desire for gold. Cupidity today always means greed.

Rapacity is another word for greed. The adjective form of this word is rapacious, and you may have noticed that these words sound like another word you know: rape. All of these words derive from the Latin verb rapere, which means ?to seize.? The word ?rape? first entered what was then Middle English in the 1200s from French, which inherited the word from Latin itself. Given this organic evolution and the violent nature of life in the Dark Ages, it is not surprising that the word came to refer to the forcible? seizing of women. The words rapacity and rapacious, however, entered English directly from Latin some 400 years later during the 1600s, and were probably invented by Latin speaking scholars. These words thus retained more of their original, unsexualized, Latin meanings of seizing things in general, and over time came to refer to insatiable and even violent greed for material wealth.

The Worship of Mammon, by Evelyn de Morgan. Mammon was a demon associated with avarice.

Acquisitiveness, or the quality of being acquisitive,? also refers to the desire to amass material possessions, although it does not necessarily have as negative a connotation as the other words we have been discussing. An innocent stamp collector, for instance, could be in an acquisitive mood when she goes shopping for stamps on eBay. It can also, however, have nasty, greedy overtones depending on the context in which it is used. You may have noticed the word ?acquire? lurking in these words. Acquire derives from the synonymous Latin verb aqcuirere, which has changed little over the years as you can see.

Avarice isn?t just about acquiring lots of stuff, though; it?s also about hoarding it all to yourself and refusing to share with others. The words miserliness, niggardliness, parsimoniousness, and penuriousness all have to do with this other aspect of greediness. A miser is a person who hoards money for its own sake and doesn?t even enjoy it. Ebeneezer Scrooge, from Charles Dickens? A Christmas Carol,? is the ultimate miser (at least, until he gets some ghostly visits on Christmas Eve). Even though he is very rich, he refuses to spend money on coal to heat his offices properly, and his own home is shabby, drab, and dark. As the narrator informs us, ?Darkness was cheap, and Scrooge liked it.? If a person behaves like a miser, you might call him or his actions miserly, and the quality of being miserly is miserliness. In Latin, miser originally meant wretched. You might also call a miser a skinflint, a pinchpenny, a tightwad, a cheapskate, or a niggard.

A what?! Despite what you may think, the word niggard has absolutely no relation to the denigrating racial epithet that derives from the word ?negro.? Niggard comes from the Middle English word nyggard, which in turn came from the old Swedish word nygg, which simply meant stingy. Niggardly is a synonym of miserly, and niggardliness is a synonym of miserliness. The word ?negro? came from the Spanish and Portuguese words for the color black, which were in turn were derived from the Latin word for black, niger. Even though the two words have completely different etymologies and meanings, the word niggard has fallen out of use in public speech because it sounds a lot like that other word, although sometimes it still can occur in written language where the distinction between the two words is clear. While this word is most likely disappearing from the English language, the SAT can still test you on it, so you still have to know it.

As a final note on avarice, I offer you this charming song from Gounod?s Faust, in which the demon Mephistopheles encourages the village folk to worship the Golden Calf, a symbol of money and greed from the Old Testament. It?s pretty catchy:

In Catholicism, the heavenly virtue meant to combat the sin of avarice is charity. According to the Roman Catholic Church, charity is not only the action of giving away money and possessions to the poor; the Latin word caritas from which the English word charity is derived is a synonym of the Greek word agape, which in Christian texts refers to universal love for all humanity. Charity is thus a form of love for humanity that is the opposite of the selfishness implied by greed or avarice. Words that relate to the heavenly virtue of charity include philanthropy, altruism, largesse, liberality, and munificence.

Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919) was a Guilded Age steel magnate who gave away the equivalent of 4.8 billion 2010 USD throughout his life to various projects, including Carnegie Hall, Carnegie-Mellon University, and countless public libraries.

A philanthropist is a rich person who gives away lots of money to charity. Philanthropy is this form of charitable giving. Philanthropy derives from the Greek roots philia and anthro. Philia is another Greek word for love (it specifically describes the kind of love that friends have for each other), and anthro means human (anthropology is the study of human cultures, for instance). A philanthropist is thus someone who loves humanity (and shows it by giving away lots of money). A misanthrope, on the other hand, is someone who hates humanity (in Greek, mis- indicates hatred. A misogynist is someone who hates women, for example).

Altruism is, according to the Random House dictionary, the principle or practice of unselfish concern for or devotion to the welfare of others. It was most likely coined by the nineteenth-century French writer Auguste Comte, who derived it from the Latin word alter, or ?other.? Altruism is thus ?other-ism? as opposed to egoism, which is ?I-ism? (ego is the Latin word for ?I?). An altruist is thus a person who puts the needs of others before his own needs, and might even go so far as to sacrifice his own well-being in order to help others. Such heroic deeds could be described as altruistic.

An allegory of Charity, presented as a mother by the painter Anthony van Dyck.

Largesse or largess is the generous bestowal of gifts, and this word was originally a French word that came to English in the late 1100s, and was probably first used in the context of feudal relationships. As you might guess, it has the same root as the word ?large:? largus, a Latin word meaning ample or generous. Liberality, while it does contain the word ?liberal,? is not an inherently political term. The word liberal derives from the Latin word liber, which means free. Back in the day, the word liberal referred to all sorts of qualities having to do with freedom, including freedom of thought and open-mindedness (as in the liberal arts) and freedom with one?s money, or generosity. Later, over the course of the eighteenth century, it came to be associated with proponents of political reforms and especially democratic government. Since then political liberalism has evolved in a number of different directions and can mean many things today, but, as modern political liberals like to point out, the word still carries many of its older meanings as well.

Munificence is the quality of being munificent, or unusually generous. It derives from the Latin word munificus, which means generous, bountiful, liberal. A generous person can be said to be munificent, and an especially generous gift can be said to be munificent as well.

That wraps up our discussion of avarice and charity for today. Remember, if you want even more help with trick SAT Vocab words, you can study them with me or another SAT expert through Test Masters. Until next time, happy studying!

Egypt election turns US policy on its head

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The election of an Islamist president in Egypt is turning longstanding U.S. policy in the Mideast inside out: The Obama administration is relieved that the candidate representing three decades of close partnership with the United States lost.

The United States is now set to embrace a religious-based former opposition leader who does not share many U.S. goals, perhaps including the 30-year peace with Israel upon which U.S. policy in the region is based. The embrace won't be warm, and for the administration it will come with strings attached.

Still, the administration is calling the election of Mohammed Morsi on Sunday a milestone in the transition to democracy.

Morsi, from the formerly banned fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood group, is the first Islamist president of Egypt. He defeated Ahmed Shafiq, ousted President Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister, in a tight race that deeply split the nation.

Now Morsi faces a daunting struggle for power with the still-dominant military rulers who took over after Mubarak was forced out in last year's Arab uprising.

The U.S. mostly had held the Muslim Brotherhood at arm's length in deference to Mubarak and long has eyed with suspicion the party's emerging positions on Israel, women's rights and religious freedom. The Muslim Brotherhood has said it would seek changes to Egypt's 1979 peace treaty with Israel without canceling it. Morsi said in his first televised speech that he would preserve Egypt's international accords, a reference to the peace deal with Israel.

Despite reservations, the Obama administration is relieved that Morsi won without unleashing a new wave of violence and unrest, and without provoking a military coup.

Morsi was popularly elected, and the freedom of the election is more important than who won it, U.S. officials said.

"We look forward to working together with President-elect Morsi and the government he forms to advance the many shared interests between Egypt and the United States," White House press secretary Jay Carney said Monday. "We judge individuals and parties that are elected in a democratic process by their actions, not by their religious affiliation."

"Our commitment to the revolution that began in Egypt ... is to a process that provides for a transition to democracy that is transparent," Carney said.

Deep concern that violence might erupt Sunday when the winner of the runoff was announced ebbed Monday as the United States, Israel and other nations assessed what the outcome portends.

"We want to see President-elect Morsi take steps to advance national unity, to uphold universal values, to respect the rights of all Egyptians, particularly women, minorities (and) Christians," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

U.S. officials said the administration is ready to send a senior official to Cairo to meet in person with Morsi and members of his government once his Cabinet is assembled and Washington is assured that the military has turned or will turn over power to the new president. Officials said full diplomatic recognition by the United States is likely once Morsi is inaugurated. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because plans for Morsi's inauguration were not final.

The administration had expressed no public preference in advance of Sunday's announcement of the runoff results.

President Barack Obama made a point of calling both Morsi and the losing military-backed candidate on Sunday. He urged the military establishment to "play a role in Egyptian politics by supporting the democratic process and working to unify the Egyptian people," the White House said.

The military leadership has committed to handing over power at the end of this month.

"It's up to them to meet those commitments now going forward," Nuland said.

The United States wants Morsi to make a stronger statement of commitment to the peace deal signed at Camp David in 1979 but is settling so far for oblique references.

Nuland said the U.S. has heard nothing from Morsi to suggest that Egypt would rethink the treaty.

"Obviously we look forward to talking to President-elect Morsi and his government about Egypt's relationships in the neighborhood going forward, its upholding of all of its international obligations," Nuland said.

The peace treaty with Israel is the biggest unknown posed by the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood and more fundamentalist Islamic political parties in Egypt. The treaty is broadly unpopular in Egypt even though it is the bedrock for more than $1 billion in badly needed U.S. aid annually. Without an autocrat to keep the treaty in place by force, its long-term fate is uncertain.

Carney had a subtle warning to the Islamists that some U.S. support hinges on the treaty and Egypt's role as a peacemaker and bulwark among Arab nations. Washington was willing to overlook many of Mubarak's faults because he resisted pressure within Egypt to break the Camp David accords with Israel or loosen its alliance with the United States.

"We believe it is essential for the Egyptian government to continue to fulfill Egypt's role as a pillar of regional peace, security and stability," Carney said. "We will continue to emphasize this message with the new government and structure our engagement accordingly."

The extent of Morsi's power is not clear after the ruling military stripped most of the major powers from his post, but his victory speaks to the ebb of U.S. influence in the Mideast now and in the future, said Aaron David Miller, a Mideast scholar at the Wilson Center.

"For 50 years we dealt with authoritarian leaders" across the region, Miller said, because it served practical interests to do so. Bahrain and Saudi Arabia are about all that remain autocratic and strong U.S. allies, he noted.

"Dorothy, we're not in Kansas anymore," Miller said. "Our policies in the region are opposed by the vast majority of Arabs, and public opinion now plays a bigger role in governing. Our space is going to shrink."

(AP) ? The Wall Street analysts who know Facebook best are giving the company's stock a mixed review. Think: like, not love.

A flood of analyst reports from the banks that led Facebook's initial public offering gave the company's stock a mix of "Neutral" and "Buy" ratings on Wednesday. The day marks the end of a 40-day quiet period following the IPO, during which the underwriters aren't allowed to issue ratings.

Morgan Stanley, the lead bank in the IPO, gave a $38 target price for Facebook's stock over the next 12 months. That's the same as the IPO price Facebook has failed to match since its first day of trading. The analyst says Facebook has long-term opportunities in mobile despite decent concerns.

Facebook's stock slid 21 cents to $32.89 in midday trading.

Economist shows the value of moving back with mom and dad

Monday, June 25, 2012

Though many may dread the idea, young adults who move back home with mom and dad after a job loss may benefit from it more than they realize. Research published in the Journal of Political Economy finds that returning to the nest can be valuable insurance in a tough labor market, serving as a short-term safety net while also keeping long-term earnings from being stunted by a job loss.

"Intuitively, it makes sense that people move home after an employment shock," said Greg Kaplan, an economics professor at the University of Pennsylvania and the study's author. "We've seen a lot of anecdotal evidence of this during the latest recession, but there hadn't been much hard data on how common it is or what the effects might be. This study demonstrates that the option to move home is potentially very important."

Kaplan used data on nearly 1,500 men born between 1980 and 1984. Surveys tracked the men through their 20s, capturing employment status and living arrangements for each month. By the age of 23, nearly 40 percent of the men in the sample had returned home for at least a month after initially moving away from home. Those who stopped working were 63 percent more likely to back move home in the following three months, compared to those who continued to work. Constraints of the survey data forced Kaplan to limit his sample to men who did not go to college, but an additional dataset suggests that the phenomenon applies to the broader population. "When we look at aggregate state-level data we see a similar pattern," Kaplan said. "As a state's unemployment level increases, so do co-residency rates."

The data show an important long-term advantage to moving home after a job loss. Take for example an average person in Kaplan's sample who loses his job at the age of 20. People in that situation had earnings at age 26 that were 25 percent lower than someone who did not lose a job. However, this long-term effect was concentrated almost entirely among youths who did not live with their parents and did not return home after their job loss. Those who lost a job and did move back home had essentially the same earnings in later years as people who had never lost a job.

Why does living with mom and dad serve as a buffer from the negative earnings effect? Kaplan believes it's because those living at home can be choosier when looking for a new job. They have the option to wait for a job that offers higher future earning potential. "Jobs with higher growth potential may be harder to find," Kaplan said. "And they often involve low earnings in the short run but higher earnings in the future?an internship for example. If you're living at home, you might be able to wait for these better opportunities."

But if you're on your own and need to pay rent, you need a decent-paying job quickly. Easier-to-find jobs?like food service or simple labor?have lower long-term growth potential. As a result people who are pushed into those jobs will have lower earnings down the line compared to those who can live at home and wait it out.

To test this idea, Kaplan used his real-world data to construct a theoretical model that simulates labor market choices. "In the model, I can do counterfactual experiments," he said. "I can take away the option to move home and see how important it is in different circumstances."

Using his data, Kaplan modeled how a 23-year-old might evaluate job offers in a world where the option to move home was turned on or off. He created two types of hypothetical jobs. "Safe" jobs come around often, but have lower potential for future earnings. "Risky" jobs are rarer, but have higher future earnings.

According to the model, there would be as many as 15 percent fewer youths working in risky, high-growth jobs if the option to move home is removed entirely, resulting in lower earnings over the long term. The model results echo the long-term income loss found in the real-world data and provide good evidence that the pattern is linked to constrained job choices for those who may be unable to move home.

Protests continue in Cairo amid threats of crackdown by military junta

Home ? World News

By Barry Grey
23 June 2012

As tens of thousands rallied Friday in Cairo?s Tahrir Square against the assumption by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) of dictatorial powers, the standoff between SCAF and the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) over the disputed presidential election grew more tense, and the junta threatened to unleash repression against the protesters.

Friday saw the biggest of the daily demonstrations called by the Islamist Brotherhood since Tuesday to protest a series of moves by SCAF dissolving the MB-dominated parliament and constituent assembly and effectively placing all legislative and executive power in the hands of the generals.

Tensions have increased since the Supreme Presidential Electoral Commission, appointed under the deposed dictator Hosni Mubarak, delayed its announcement of the winner of last weekend?s presidential runoff from Thursday to this weekend. The commission claimed it was putting off the announcement to consider charges of election fraud.

Both the MB candidate, Mohamed Mursi, and his runoff opponent, Ahmed Shafiq, a former air force commander and Mubarak?s last prime minister, have claimed victory. It is widely suspected that SCAF ordered the delay in order to prepare the army and police for an anticipated eruption of popular protest over an announcement handing the presidency to the generals? candidate, Shafiq.

The state-owned Al Ahram newspaper on Friday cited unnamed government figures and Western diplomats as saying the Supreme Presidential Electoral Commission was set to announce the victory of Shafiq on Sunday evening. The article reported a source as saying the SCAF-backed candidate would be credited with having received 50.7 percent of the vote.

Sources at the Supreme Presidential Electoral Commission, the newspaper reported, would not confirm the reports of its intention to declare Shafiq the winner.

Earlier in the week a group of judges monitoring the elections, the Judges of Egypt, issued a statement unofficially declaring Mursi the winner. The judges said Mursi had won the election with about 900,000 more votes than Ahmed Shafiq.

According to ahramonline, intense negotiations between the Brotherhood leadership and the military command continued into the night Thursday toward a ?a political deal? that would allow Mursi to assume the presidency, while keeping real power in the hands of the generals. The SCAF is demanding that the Brotherhood pull its supporters out of Tahrir Square and accept the military?s constitutional decree arrogating to itself dictatorial powers.

The report quoted a Brotherhood source as saying that a deal could be reached by Saturday or Sunday to allow Mursi to assume the presidency. ?But if no deal is reached, and if the SCAF insists on taking everything and giving nothing, then we would not be surprised if they announce Shafiq as president,? the source said.

The US is giving its tacit support to the junta, neither denouncing its power grab nor demanding that it rescind its dictatorial measures. Washington continues to maintain the absurd pretense that the junta is presiding over a transition to democracy. In line with this fa?ade, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in a television interview urged SCAF to hand over power to the ?legitimate winner.?

The conflict between SCAF and the Muslim Brotherhood is a power struggle within the Egyptian bourgeoisie. The MB is itself a right-wing party hostile to the working class and committed to defending both capitalism and the existing imperialist set-up in the Middle East. It reflects the interests of sections of the corporate-financial elite and privileged middle class layers that have been excluded during the decades of military rule from political power and what they consider their rightful share of the economic spoils from the exploitation of the workers.

The Brotherhood collaborated with SCAF in suppressing the revolutionary upsurge centered in the working class that brought down Mubarak in February of 2011, but came increasingly into conflict with the generals after winning a majority in the parliamentary elections.

It wants to secure a share of state power by winning the post of president, reduced by SCAF?s decrees to a mere figure-head, and is eager to work out a deal with the junta. At the same time, it, along with the military, fears a new eruption of mass protests and strikes by the working class and is seeking to head off a revolutionary movement to overthrow the capitalist state and establish socialism.

The MB also fears that the installation of Shafiq, following the military coup carried out last week, will discredit it by exposing its role in promoting the fiction of a ?transition to democracy? under the junta.

Friday afternoon, SCAF flatly rejected calls by the MB, other Islamists, liberals and pseudo-left groups such as the Revolutionary Socialists that have now lined up completely behind the Brotherhood that it rescind its measures dissolving the institutions put in place to provide the illusion of a democratic transition.

In a four-minute statement read on state television, SCAF warned that the army and police would be mobilized in response to any attacks on Egypt?s ?public or private institutions.? Defending its issuance of an amendment to the constitutional declaration of 2011 giving itself immunity and complete control over the country?s security forces, granting the army the right to arrest civilians, and assuming control over legislative and budgetary issues, SCAF declared: ?The issuance of the supplementary constitutional decree was necessitated by the needs of administering the affairs of the state during this critical period in the history of our nation.?

It said ominously that it would allow peaceful protests so long as they did not conflict with the ?interests of the country.?

The statement denounced MB presidential candidate Mursi for declaring victory prior to an announcement by the election commission and blamed him for growing political unrest.

Mursi responded by reiterating his demand that the junta reverse its dissolution of the parliament and constituent assembly and its assumption of dictatorial powers. However, he refrained from repeating his previous claims to have won the election, and made clear the Muslim Brotherhood?s desire to collaborate with SCAF, calling its members ?honest men working for the betterment of Egypt.? He added, ?They are working to safeguard our land.?

The Egyptian army is the backbone of the Egyptian capitalist state and the main bulwark against working class revolution. Should the Muslim Brotherhood?or, for that matter, its pseudo-left supporters such as the Revolutionary Socialists?manage to carve out a share of state power, they would deploy the military and police to put down a challenge to capitalist rule by the working class.

10 cities where buying actually beats renting

It?s the latest aftershock from the housing bust: Across the country, rents are rising. Nearly 4 million families have transitioned into rentals since the foreclosure wave began; meanwhile, new construction largely dried up after the housing bubble burst. The result: Vacancy rates in many cities are low and prices are going up.

The National Association of Realtors projects a 4 percent average increase in rents nationally this year and 4 percent in 2013. It has motivated aspiring landlords to snap up property and pushed Wall Street firms to pursue buying lender-owned properties in bulk. It also means the deals renters could finagle during the worst of the downturn no longer exist in the cities that have rebounded most strongely.

Forbes.com: 10 U.S. cities where buying beats renting

Take Minneapolis. With a tight vacancy rate of 2.5 percent, the average rent in the metro area is $965 per month, up 2.3 percent from this time last year. With home prices down more than 30 percent since 2006, it?s actually cheaper to buy. The average monthly mortgage payment on a home bought now would be $122 less than the average rent. That put Minneapolis in second place on Forbes? annual list of the worst cities for renters this year. ?The rental market here has been hot for about a year,? said Teresa Boardman, a realtor with Saint Paul Home Realty. She said rental properties in downtown Minneapolis and around the University of Minnesota have been in particularly high demand. ?My daughter had a one-bedroom apartment for almost $900, and I mean it was very small. I have clients renting efficiency apartments, and those are going to $850 to $900 a month.?

Forbes.com: In Pictures: The best and worst cities for renters

To find the places where renters fare the best and worst, we started with the 44 largest U.S. Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) and Metropolitan Divisions (MSADs). These are cities and their surrounding suburbs as defined by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget.

With the help of Marcus & Millichap, an Encino, Calif.-based real estate investment firm, we ranked these metro areas according to four criteria: average rent in the first quarter of 2012; how much that price has changed year-over-year; vacancy rates, because more empty units mean more choices and, typically, better prices; and the difference between the average monthly rental payment versus monthly mortgage payments (including taxes and insurance on a home at the local median asking price with a 30-year mortgage at 4.5 percent with 20 percent down).

Forbes.com: America's most affordable cities

If the Twin Cities? rental market is sparking, New York is on fire. While rents have always been notoriously high in the Big Apple, it still has long been considered a place where renting beats buying. That?s changed. The New York metro area now takes the top spot on our list of worst places for renters.

A mortgage payment on a median-priced home in the metro area currently costs $217 less than a rent check. ?They?re almost on par, which is amazing because it has usually been the reverse,? said Hessam Nadji, a managing director at Marcus & Millichap.

Forbes.com: The best cities to buy a home right now

He notes that rents in New York City only fell 10 percent to 12 percent in the downturn, and only during the worst of the 2009 recession. Thanks in large part to stronger-than-anticipated job growth, a rental market recovery took root in 2010; by the end of 2011, the rental market had not only recovered its pre-recession level prices, it started to surpass them.

Forbes.com: 12 must-know tips before becoming a landlord

The biggest rent increases have been in Manhattan, where the vacancy rate is an astoundingly low 1 percent, said Gary Malin, president of Citi Habitats. His real estate brokerage, which tracks local rent data on a monthly basis, reports that the borough?s rents are at an all-time high of 1.3 percent above the former 2007 peak. And they?ll keep climbing. A mere 2,600 additional apartment units are projected to become available in 2012, the lowest number in years. ?The reality is there isn?t a lot of new inventory to keep up with demand,? said Malin.

Other cities where rising rents are making it hard on the pocketbook are San Jose, Calif. (No. 4 on our list), Washington, D.C. (No. 6), and Boston (No. 7). ?The primary coastal metros are markets with incredibly low vacancies where it?s really hard to add units because of regulations,? explained Nadji. He said rents are surging in places where job growth has been relatively robust during the past year.

On the flip side, rental bargains can still be found in many of the cities rocked by the real estate bust. No. 1 on our list of best cities for renters: Tucson, Ariz., where the average monthly rent is just $652, a 1.6 percent increase from last year. The vacancy rate is 6 percent, helped by a relatively large pool of unsold, vacant homes, translating into more choices and reasonable rents for locals happy to stay away from an uncertain home market.

Forbes.com: American cities with the most construction under way

The renting is also good in Texas: San Antonio ranks fourth on our list of the best cities for renters and Houston is No. 6. The state is adding jobs and population, but thanks to a lack of building regulations and zoning, developers have little trouble erecting new houses and apartment complexes to keep pace with demand. ?Texas is the country?s highest construction region over a long-term period of time,? said Nadji. San Antonio has a 6.7 percent vacancy rate and Houston?s is 8.1 percent. Average rents in both metro areas are under $800.\

Islamist Morsi elected Egypt's president

CAIRO (AP) ? Islamist Mohammed Morsi was declared the winner Sunday in Egypt's first free presidential election in history, closing the tumultuous first phase of a democratic transition and opening a new struggle with the still-dominant military rulers who recently stripped the presidency of most of its powers.

In Tahrir Square, the birthplace of the uprising that ousted autocratic President Hosni Mubarak, joyous supporters of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood wept and kneeled on the ground in prayer when they heard the announcement on live television. They danced, set off fireworks and released doves in the air with Morsi's picture attached in celebrations not seen in the square since Mubarak was forced out on Feb. 11, 2011.

Many are looking now to see whether Morsi will try to take on the military and wrestle back the powers they took from his office just one week ago. Thousands vowed to remain in Tahrir to demand that the ruling generals reverse their decision.

In his first televised speech, the 60-year old U.S.-trained engineer called on Egyptians to unite and tried to reassure minority Christians, who mostly backed Morsi's rival Ahmed Shafiq because they feared Islamic rule.

He said he carries "a message of peace" to the world and pledged to preserve Egypt's international accords, a reference to the peace deal with Israel.

He also paid tribute to nearly 900 protesters killed in last year's uprising.

"I wouldn't have been here between your hands as the first elected president without ... the blood, the tears, and sacrifices of the martyrs," he said.

In the lengthy and redundant speech, Morsi appeared to be struggling to compose his sentences. Wearing a blue suit and tie, he looked stiff and uncomfortable and did not smile throughout as he read from a paper. He was non-confrontational and did not mention the last-minute power grab by the ruling military, instead praising the armed forces.

The White House congratulated Morsi and urged him to advance national unity as he forms a new government. White House press secretary Jay Carney said Morsi's victory is a milestone in Egypt's transition to democracy after decades of authoritarian rule under Mubarak. The Obama administration had expressed no public preference in the presidential race.

Left on the sidelines of the political drama are the liberal and secular youth groups that drove the uprising against Mubarak, left to wonder whether Egypt has taken a step towards becoming an Islamist state. Some grudgingly supported Morsi in the face of Shafiq, who was Mubarak's last prime minister, while others boycotted the vote.

Morsi will now have to reassure them that he represents the whole country, not just Islamists, and will face enormous challenges after security and the economy badly deteriorated in the transition period.

Pro-democracy leader Mohammed ElBaradei urged unity after the results were announced.

"It is time we work all as Egyptians as part of a national consensus to build Egypt that is based on freedom and social justice," he wrote on his Twitter account.

The elections left the nation deeply polarized with one side backing Shafiq, who promised to provide stability and prevent Egypt from becoming a theocracy. Because of his military career, many saw him as the military's preferred candidate.

In the other camp are those eager for democratic change and backers of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood who were persecuted, jailed and banned under Mubarak but now find themselves one of the two most powerful groups in Egypt.

The other power center is the ruling military council that took power after the uprising and is headed by Mubarak's defense minister of 20 years.

Just one week ago, at the moment polls were closing in the presidential runoff, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) issued constitutional amendments that stripped the president's office of most of its major powers. The ruling generals made themselves the final arbiters over the most pressing issues still complicating the transition? such as writing the constitution, legislating, passing the state budget? and granted military police broad powers to detain civilians.

"I am happy the Brotherhood won because now the revolution will continue on the street against both of them, the Brotherhood and the SCAF," said Lobna Darwish, an activist who has boycotted the elections.

Also, a few days before that constitutional declaration, a court dissolved the freely elected parliament, which is dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood, leaving the military now in charge of legislating.

Brotherhood members and experts said the results were used a bargaining chip between the generals and the Brotherhood over the parameters of what appears to be a new power-sharing agreement. The country's new constitution is not written and the authorities of the president are not clear.

This is the first time modern Egypt will be headed by an Islamist and by a freely elected civilian. The country's last four presidents over the past six decades have all came from the ranks of the military.

"Congratulations because this means the end of the Mubarak state," said Shady el-Ghazali Harb, a prominent activist who was among the leaders of the protests in January and February last year.

The results of the elections were delayed for four days amid accusations of manipulation and foul play by both sides, raising political tensions in Egypt to a fever pitch.

The delay plunged the country into nerve-wrecking anticipation and pushed tensions to a fever pitch. Parallel mass rallies by Shafiq and Morsi supporters were held in different parts of Cairo and cut-throat media attacks by supporters of both swarmed TV shows. In the hours before the announcement of the winner, the fear of new violence was palpable.

Heavy security was deployed around the country, especially outside state institutions, in anticipation of possible violence. Workers were sent home early from jobs, jewelry stores closed for fear of looting and many were stocking up on food and forming long lines at cash machines in case new troubles began.

Morsi narrowly defeated Shafiq with 51.7 percent of the vote versus 48.3, by a margin of only 800,000 votes, the election commission said. Turnout was 51 percent.

Farouk Sultan, the head of the commission, described the elections as "an important phase in the end of building our nascent democratic experience."

Sultan went to pains to explain the more than 400 complaints presented by the two candidates challenging counting procedures and alleging attempts of rigging. It appeared to be an attempt to discredit claims that the election commission was biased in favor of Shafiq, the candidate perceived as backed by the military rulers.

The country is deeply divided between supporters of the Brotherhood, liberals and leftists who also decided to back them as a way to stand up to the military, and other secular forces that fear the domination of the Brotherhood, and grew critical of it in the past year. The small margin of victory for Morsi also sets him for a strong opposition from supporters of Shafiq, viewed as a representative of the old regime.

Naguib Sawiris, a Coptic Christian business tycoon who joined a liberal bloc in voicing opposition to the Muslim Brotherhood a day before the results were announced, said he expects the new president to send a reassuring message to Egypt's Christian minority who represent around 10 percent of the population of 85 million.

"There are fears of imposing an Islamic state ... where Christians don't have same rights," Sawiris told the private TV station CBC. Morsi "is required to prove the opposite. ... We don't want speeches or promises but in the coming period, it is about taking action. ... He was not our choice but we are accepting it is a democratic choice."

Hamdeen Sabahi, a leftist presidential candidate who came in a surprising third place in the first round of elections, asked Morsi to live up to his pledges to form a national coalition government and appoint presidential aides from different groups "that express the largest national consensus."

Khaled Abdel-Hamid, a leading leftist politician, said Morsi must fight to get his powers back or he will lose any popular support he may have garnered.

"If he fights to get his power back, we will support him. But if he doesn't fight back, then he is settling for siding with the military," he said.

GOLF: Patipaksiri ends amateur career in style

Cypress resident plans to turn pro after winning Long Beach City Championship.

LONG BEACH - Lalita Patipaksiri made sure her last amateur golf event was one to remember.

The Cypress resident and recent UC Irvine graduate claimed victory Friday in the 82nd annual Long Beach Women's City Championship, shooting a 36-hole total of 7-under-par 141.

She followed a round of 5-under 69 on Thursday at El Dorado Park with a 2-under 72 at Recreation Park to beat former UCI teammate Hillary Packard by two shots. Patipaksiri made birdies at Nos. 2, 7 and 12 and avoided trouble down the stretch, recording par on the final six holes.

"At this course, you can be aggressive with it," said Patipaksiri, who resisted the temptation to post a really low score by keeping her drives in the fairway and playing for the center of the green. "My score wasn't as low as it could have been, but it was good enough to win. ... I had to maintain and stay calm, and play safe."

Patipaksiri, 21, will now join the Cactus Tour, a women's professional tour based in Arizona, before eventually going to LPGA qualifying school.

"I'm gonna have to improve quite a bit," said Patipaksiri, whose diminutive frame and attention to accuracy aren't conducive to length off the tee.

Patipaksiri had several birdie opportunities over the final holes but never converted. She missed a 12-footer on 16 that could have stretched her lead, then missed again from inside 10 feet on 17. With a two-stroke cushion on 18, Patipaksiri left her second shot on the

front fringe of the elevated green, then putted within two feet and tapped in for par.
