Sanam Lyonpo meets with Bangladesh Business Delegation- Minutes

The 22 member FBCCI business delegation with MoAF Minister, Lyonpo (Dr.) Pema Gyamtsho

A 22 member Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) business delegation from Bangladesh led by Mr. A.K. Azad called on the Hon?ble Sanam Lyonpo on 31 May 2012 at the MoAF Conference Hall at 11 am. After the pleasantries and opening remarks by Sanam Lyonpo on the excellent relationship between Bangladesh and Bhutan at all levels and after further remarks by His Excellency, the Ambassador of Bangladesh to Bhutan on the increase of trade and commerce, the following were discussed:

  1. The need to take advantage of the strengths and opportunities that exist between the two countries to promote trade links
  2. The need to work closely in forest and water sector; Bhutan has high value timbers for furniture and clean water resources to venture into bottled water
  3. Bird watchers, butterfly lovers etc could have exchange programmes within the framework of the Eastern Himalayas Conference on Climate Change as birds are good indicators of climate change.
  4. The meeting agreed that there are prospects for business venture in agriculture and agri business? through FDI and contact farming. Prospects? exists ?in? seed potato, ginger, cardamom, garlic, turmeric, asparagus, high value vegetables and in agro processing sector including mineral water.
  5. It was agreed that there is scope to increase volume and value of the presently traded goods in agriculture especially fruits and summer vegetables.
  6. Prospects in establishing furniture? houses under FDI arrangements was also discussed and agreed to be pursued through EPZ or industrial zone model where Bangladeshi investors could invest or impart their technical know how.
  7. After a price comparative study and a rapid market appraisal, the prospects of importing meat and fish items from Bangladesh should be pursued.
  8. It was noted that Bangladesh has many cold storage facilities in Rangpur area which is just over 200 kms from Phuentsholing. The delegates from Bangladesh offered to? help and impart their technical know how should Bhutan wish to? develop cold storage chain in Bhutan.
  9. The Department of Agricultural Marketing and Cooperatives will follow up on all the matters that has been discussed during this meeting. The department has been directed to send samples of seed potato and turmeric.

10. The Bangladesh Delegation extended an invitation to His Excellency the Sanam Lyonpo to visit Bangladesh with a delegation from the agricultural sector.? The delegation express their hope to receive His Excellency in Bangladesh during which time visits could be made to cold storage facilities, the furniture houses, fish and meat processing plants, Export Processing Zones and the sea port at Chittagong.

The meeting ended with exchange of pleasantries at 1140 hrs.
