Nexus Image Is a Fast, Free Image Viewer for Windows [Windows Downloads]

Nexus Image Is a Fast, Free Image Viewer for Windows Windows: Nexus Image (no relation to Google or the Nexus line of phones) is a free, sharp-looking image viewer that loads images quickly, displays EXIF information in a transparent overlay, lets you browse images via keyboard shortcuts, and can even dim your desktop to provide a lightbox effect while you browse.

Nexus Image is a portable application, and doesn't need to be installed in order to run. The app can, however, replace the default Windows Photo Viewer. When you run it for the first time, Nexus Image asks you if you want to associate the app with common image types. Once it's running, your image previews live in a vertical bar at the right side of your screen, and the image you're viewing is displayed in the center of the screen, with your desktop background dimmed a bit to bring focus to the image.

You can customize how much your desktop is dimmer in the application's settings, and moving between images and folders is as easy as pressing Page Up or Page Down. You can just as easily zoom in or out on images, or switch back to the desktop to bring up another folder to browse. The app is completely free, and if you've been looking for an image viewer for Windows but haven't settled on one that's quite right for you, it's worth a look.

PostSecret App Discontinued Because of 'Malicious' Posts (Mashable)

The secret is out: PostSecret has killed off its iPhone app just three months after putting it on the market in September. PostSecret founder Frank Warren says abusive content --- pornographic, gruesome and threatening material -- from a small group of users forced him to shut down the app.

[More from Mashable: Steve Jobs Action Figure Is Eerily Realistic [PICS]]

"Bad content caused users to complain to me, Apple and the FBI," Warren wrote in a blog post this week. "I was contacted by law enforcement about bad content on the App. Threats were made against users, moderators and my family. As much as we tried, we were unable to maintain a bully-free environment. Weeks ago I had to remove the App from my daughter's phone."

The $1.99 app allowed users to anonymously post secrets, discover other users? hush-hush thoughts and react to their submissions. The anonymity made it hard for Warren to remove contributors who posted content with "malicious intent."

[More from Mashable: 4 Big Moves Google Should Make in 2012]

"99% of the secrets created were in the spirit of PostSecret," Warren says. "Unfortunately, the scale of secrets was so large that even 1% of bad content was overwhelming for our dedicated team of volunteer moderators who worked 24 hours a day 7 days a week removing content."

Warren also says he and his team fought hard to find a solution to this problem. One attempt involved prescreening 30,000 secrets each day.

"Deciding to remove the App from the App Store last week and holding back the release of the Android version cost us money but we feel it was the right thing to do," he says.

PostSecret plans to keep its website and blog in operation. The company has built a hefty following that likely will stick around despite the app's absence: PostSecret more than 1 million Facebook fans, 460,000 PostSecret blog.

In case your missed the promo video about the app from August, here it is:

Judge won't hear Tribune exit plan until May (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? A U.S. bankruptcy judge told Tribune Co and its creditors to aim for a May hearing date for the company's latest proposed creditor payback plan, further extending a long-running bankruptcy that Tribune had tried to end earlier this year.

Judge Kevin Carey said in a court order issued late Thursday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware that Tribune and creditors should try to resolve ongoing scheduling disputes "with a view toward a confirmation hearing to be held in mid- to late-May 2012."

Tribune, which filed the proposed exit plan in November with the backing of its unsecured creditors' committee, JPMorgan Chase Bank and a handful of other creditors, had asked for a February hearing.

The plan offers a roughly $500 million settlement with note holders, and would allow the court to resolve potential disputes between creditors over amounts to be paid to various parties without impeding the company's efforts to emerge from bankruptcy.

The Chapter 11 case, filed in December 2008, is already past its third anniversary. Tribune had hoped to confirm a restructuring plan in 2011, but Carey in October rejected Tribune's previous plan, as well as a rival plan from a group of note holders. Carey said neither plan was confirmable under bankruptcy law.

Bought by financier Sam Zell in 2007, the Tribune owns the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune newspapers and more than 20 television stations. Zell's $8.2 billion leveraged buyout of the company is considered by note holders to be the key catalyst in rendering it insolvent.

The case is In re Tribune Co, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, District of Delaware, No. 08-13141.

Memorable links from the first half of 2011

2011 was an exciting, stressful, occasionally scary, and very fruitful year for me, personally and professionally. I hope you are all pleased with the way life treated you this year. And if not, there?s always 2012!

Instead of reviewing my activities in the past year, I thought I?d do something a little different and share with you the blog posts and news articles from 2011 that I found the most memorable. Because there are so many, this post contains links from January through June. If I remember to do a part two, that list will undoubtedly be shorter because I started my current job in June and have had much less time for blog and news reading.

Browse, read, and enjoy. Glancing over this list, I think it probably tells you a thing or two about where my greatest interests lie.
